19. Joseph Of Arimathea : On The Primal Aims Of Jesus
아리마태아의 요셉 / 예수의 근본 가르침에 대하여

You would know the primal aim of Jesus,
and I would fain tell you.
But none can touch with fingers the life of the blessed wine,
nor see the sap that feeds the branches.
여러분들이 예수께서 이루시려 했던
일의 의미를 알고 싶어한다면 저는 기꺼이 말씀드리겠습니다.
그러나 누구도 혈관 속을 흐르는 신성한 피를 손으로 만져볼 수 없고
나뭇가지에 흐르는 수액을 눈으로 볼 수는 없습니다.

And though I have eaten of the grapes
and have tasted the new vintage at the winepress,
I cannot tell you all. I can only relate what I know of Him.
포도를 따먹거나 새로 수확하여 만든 포도주를 맛보았다 해도
내가 그 포도에 대한 모든 것을 여러분에게 이야기하기는 어렵겠지요.
그러므로 그분에 대해서도 내가 아는 것만을 이야기할 수밖에 없습니다.

Our Master and our Beloved lived but three prophet's seasons.
They were the spring of His song, the summer of His ecstasy,
and the autumn of His passion; and each season was a thousand years.
우리가 사랑하는 선생님은 예언자로서 불과 세 계절만을 살고 돌아가셨습니다.
그분이 노래하셨던 봄과 그분의 절정기였던 여름, 그리고 수난을 당하신 가을입니다.
그 각 계절은 천 년과 같은 가치있는 세월이었지요.

The spring of His song was spent in Galilee.
It was there that He gathered His lovers about Him,
and it was on the shores of the blue lake
that He first spoke of the Father, and of our release and our freedom.
그 분은 예언자로서의 아름다운 봄을 갈릴리에서 보내셨습니다.
자신을 사랑하는 이들을 주위에 모아 놓고 푸른 호숫가에 앉아,
하늘에 계신 아버지와
우리들의 자유와 안식에 대해 처음으로 말씀하셨던 곳이 바로 그곳입니다.

By the Lake of Galilee we lost ourselves to find our way to the Father;
and oh, the little loss that turned to such gain.
갈릴리 호숫가에서 우리는 아버지께로 향하는 길에 우리를 내맡겼습니다.
그러나 잃어버린 것은 하나도 없었고, 오히려 풍성하게 얻기만 했을 뿐입니다.

It was there the angels sang in our ears
and bade us leave the arid land for the garden of heart's desire.
그곳에서는 천사들이 우리의 귀에 대고 노래를 불러,
우리는 이 무미건조한 세상을 떠나
마음이 원하는 아름다운 정원(庭園)으로 날아갈 수 있었습니다.

He spoke of fields and green pastures; of the slopes of Lebanon
where the white lilies are heedless of the caravans 
passing in the dust of the valley.
그분은 들판과 푸른 풀밭 그리고 흰 백합꽃들이 흐드러지게 피어,
계곡의 자욱한 먼지속을 줄지어 지나가는 대상(隊商)들을 반겨주는
레바논의 골짜기에 대해 이야기하셨습니다.

He spoke of the wild brier that smiles in the sun
and yields its incense to the passing breeze.
그리고 햇살 아래 웃음 지으며 지나가는 바람에
향기를 실어보내는 들장미 이야기도 하셨지요.

And He would say,
"The lilies and the brier live but a day,
yet that day is eternity spent in freedom."
그러면서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
"백합이나 들장미는 오늘 피었다가 내일이면 시들어 죽고 만다.
그러나 그들에게는 오늘 하루가 자유롭게 누릴 수 있는 영원과 같다."

And one evening as we sat beside the stream
He said, "Behold the brook and listen to its music.
Forever shall it seek the sea, and though it is for ever seeking,
it sings its mystery from noon to noon.
그리고 우리가 함께 시냇가에 앉아 있었던
어느 날 저녁에는 또 이렇게 말씀하시기도 했습니다.
"흐르는 이 냇물을 보고 그 노래에 귀를 기울여 보자.
냇물은 영원히 바다를 찾아간다.
비록 언제까지라는 기약도 없이 그곳을 찾아가지만
날마다 그 신비를 노래부른다."

"Would that you seek the Father as the brook seeks the sea."
"너희들도 저 냇물이 바다를 찾듯이 아버지를 찾기 바란다."

Then came the summer of His ecstasy,
and the June of His love was upon us.
He spoke of naught then but the other man -- the neighbour,
the road-fellow, the stranger, and our childhood's playmates.
그 후 그분의 절정기인 여름이 왔습니다.
그 분은 우리를 더욱더 사랑하셨지요.
예수께서는 우리의 이웃이나 떠돌이, 이방인,
그리고 우리 아이들과 함께 노는 또래들에 대해서도 말씀하셨습니다.

He spoke of the traveller journeying from the east to Egypt,
of the ploughman coming home with his oxen at eventide,
of the chance guest led by dusk to our door.
그런가 하면, 동방에서 이집트로 여행을 하는 사람,
저녁 때 자기 소를 몰고 집으로 돌아가는 농부에 대해서도 이야기하셨지요.

And He would say,
"Your neighbour is your unknown self made visible.
His face shall be reflected in your still waters,
and if you gaze therein you shall behold your own countenance.
그리고 이런 말씀도 하셨답니다.
"네 이웃은 감춰진 너 자신을 비추는 거울이다.
네가 고요하다면 하느님의 얼굴이 그 위에 비추일 것이며,
만일 너희가 그 안을 가만히 들여다본다면
너희는 너희 자신의 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이다."

"Should you listen in the night, you shall hear him speak,
and his words shall be the throbbing of your own heart.
그리고 너희가 깊은 밤에 조용히 앉아 귀를 기울인다면
너희는 하느님의 음성이 들릴 것이다.
그리고 그분의 말씀이 너희의 가슴에 울려 퍼질것이다.

"Be unto him that which you would have him be unto you.
그분 안에 살아라. 그러면 그분도 너희 안에 거하시리라.

"This is my law, and I shall say it unto you,
and unto your children, and they unto their children
until time is spent and generations are no more."
나의 이 법을 너희에게 전하니 너희들은 너희 자녀에게 전할 것이며,
그들은 또 그 자녀에게 전하게 되리라.
이렇게 해서 세상의 종말까지 이 법이 전해지리라."

And on another day He said,
"You shall not be yourself alone.
You are in the deeds of other men,
and they though unknowing are with you all your days.
그리고 또 어떤 날은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
"너희들은 혼자 살아가는 것이 아니다.
다른 사람들의 언행 속에서 존재하는 것이다.
그리고 그 타인들은,
비록 네가 모르는 사람이라 해도 항상 너희와 함께 살아간다."

"They shall not commit a crime and your hand not be with their hand.
너희의 손은 너희 이웃의 손과 함께 이기에
너희가 손을 빌려주지 않는다면 그들은 결코 죄를 짓지 않는다.
악행은 결코 혼자 저지르는 것이 아니다.

"They shall not fall down but that you shall also fall down;
and they shall not rise but that you shall rise with them.
네가 쓰러지지 않는다면 그들은 쓰러지지 않을 것이다.
그리고 너희가 그들과 함께 일어서지 않으면 그들도 일어서지 못한다.

"Their road to the sanctuary is your road,
and when they seek the wasteland you too seek with them.
그들이 신성한 사원으로 갈 때 너희도 함께 가는 것이며
그들이 광야를 찾아 나설 때 너희들도 그들과 함께 가는 것이다.

"You and your neighbour are two seeds sown in the field.
Together you grow and together you shall sway in the wind.
And neither of you shall claim the field.
For a seed on its way to growth claims not even its own ecstasy.
너희들과 네 이웃은 같은 들판에 뿌려진 두 개의 씨앗이다.
너희들은 함께 자라고 함께 바람에 흔들린다.
그러나 너희들 누구도 들판을 소유하지는 못하리라.
왜냐하면 씨앗이 자신만의 환희를 위해서라 할지라도
그것은 그들 스스로 자라는 것인 것이다. 

"Today I am with you. Tomorrow I go westward;
but ere I go, I say unto you
that your neighbour is your unknown self made visible.
Seek him in love that you may know yourself,
for only in that knowledge shall you become my brothers."
오늘 나는 너희들과 함께 있다.
그리고 내일은 서쪽으로 간다.
그러나 떠나기 전에 나는 너희에게 분명히 말해둔다.
네 이웃은 너희가 알지 못하는 너 자신이다.
그러므로 너희는 이웃을 사랑함으로서 너 자신을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
그리고 오직 그렇게 할 때에만 너희들은 나의 형제가 될 것이다.

Then came the autumn of His passion.
And He spoke to us of freedom,
even as He had spoken in Galilee in the spring of His song;
but now His words sought our deeper understanding.
그리고 나서 그분의 가을이 왔고, 그분은 수난을 당하셨습니다.
그분은 예전에 갈릴리에서 말씀하셨던 그 자유에 대해 다시 말씀하셨습니다.
그러나 이번 말씀은 깊이가 있었으므로,
우리는 보다 잘 이해하려고 애썼습니다.

He spoke of leaves that sing only when blown upon the wind;
and of man as a cup filled by the ministering angel of the day
to quench the thirst of another angel.
Yet whether that cup is full or empty it shall stand crystalline
upon the board of the Most High.
그분은 바람이 불 때만 노래하는 잎새들에 대해 이야기 하셨습니다.
그리고 다른 천사의 갈증을 가시게 하기 위해
대천사가 가득 채워놓은 잔과 같은 사람들에 대해서도 말씀하셨습니다.
그러나 그 잔이 가득 차 있든 비어 있든,
하느님의 식탁 위에서는 언제나 투명하게 놓여질 것이라고 했습니다.

He said, "You are the cup and you are the wine.
Drink yourselves to the dregs;
or else remember me and you shall be quenched."
그분은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
"너희는 그 잔이며, 너희는 바로 그 포도주이다. 그 잔을 남김없이 마셔라.
그리고 나를 기억하면 너희의 갈증은 사라지리라."

And on our way to the southward He said,
"Jerusalem, which stands in pride upon the height,
shall descend to the depth of Jahannum the dark valley,
and in the midst of her desolation I shall stand alone.
남쪽으로 내려가시면서 그분은 말씀하셨습니다.
"지금 저렇게도 당당히 서 있는 예루살렘은
어두운 골짜기 깊은 곳으로 무너져 내릴 것이다.
그리고 그 폐허 한가운데에 나는 홀로 서게 되리라.

"The temple shall fall to dust,
and around the portico you shall hear the cry of widows and orphans;
and men in their haste to escape shall not know
the faces of their brothers, for fear shall be upon them all.
사원은 허물어져 먼지로 바뀔 것이며
사원의 현관에서는 과부와 고아들이 목놓아 울 것이다.
그리고 망설이다가 미처 피하지 못한 사람들은
두려움으로 인해 자기 형제의 얼굴도 알아보지 못하게 되리라. 

"But even there, if two of you shall meet and utter my name
and look to the west, you shall see me,
and these my words shall again visit your ears."
그러나 그런 상황에서도, 너희들 가운데 두 사람이 함께 모여
내 이름을 부르며 서쪽을 바라보기만 하면 너희는 내 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이며
내가 너희들을 다시 부르는 목소리를 듣게 되리라."

And when we reached the hill of Bethany,
He said, "Let us go to Jerusalem. The city awaits us.
I will enter the gate riding upon a colt, and I will speak to the multitude.
그리고 우리가 베타니아산에 다다르자 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
"자, 예루살렘으로 가자. 그 도시가 우리를 기다린다.
나는 나귀를 타고 성문에 들어서서 그곳에 모인 사람들에게 이야기하리라.

"Many are there who would chain me,
and many who would put out my flame,
but in my death you shall find life and you shall be free.
나를 사슬로 묶으려는 자도 많고 내 불꽃을 밟아 꺼버리려는 자도 많다.
그러나 내 죽음 안에서 너희는 생명을 찾을 것이며 진정한 자유를 얻으리라.

"They shall seek the breath that hovers betwixt heart
and mind as the swallow hovers between the field and his nest.
But my breath has already escaped them,
and they shall not overcome me.
그들은 들판과 둥지 사이를 떠돌며 날아다니는 제비처럼,
마음과 정신 사이에서 떠도는 숨결을 찾아다닐 것이다.
그러나 나의 숨결은 이미 그들에게서 떠났다.
그들은 결코 나를 넘어서지 못하리라.

"The walls that my Father has built around me shall not fall down,
and the acre He has made holy shall not be profaned.
나의 아버지께서 내 주위에 쌓아 올려주신 성벽은 절대로 무너지지 않는다.
그리고 그분이 거룩하게 하신 땅은 결코 더렵혀지지 않는다.

"When the dawn shall come,
the sun will crown my head and I shall be with you to face the day.
And that day shall be long, and the world shall not see its eventide.
날이 밝으면 태양은 내 머리에 왕관을 씌워줄 것이고,
나는 너희와 함께 새로운 날을 맞이하리라.
그리고 그 새로운 날은 영원할 것이며, 세상은 결코 황혼을 맞이하지 않으리라.

"The scribes and the Pharisees say the earth is thirsty for my blood.
I would quench the thirst of the earth with my blood.
But the drops shall rise oak trees and maple,
and the east shall carry the acorns to other lands."
율법학자들과 바리새인들은 이 땅이 내 피를 마시고 싶어한다고 말한다.
나는 기꺼이 내 피로 이 땅의 갈증을 식혀주리라.
그리고 그 피는 참나무와 단풍나무를 자라나게 할 것이며
그 참나무에서 나온 도토리는 동풍에 실려 다른 나라로 퍼져나갈 것이다.

And then He said,
"Judea would have a king, and she would march against the legions of Rome.
그리고 나서 그분은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
"유대인들은 왕을 원했다.
그들은 나를 왕을 세워서 로마군대와 대항해 싸우려 했던 것이다.

"I shall not be her king.
The diadems of Zion were fashioned for lesser brows.
And the ring of Solomon is small for this finger.
그러나 나는 그들의 왕이 될 수 없을 것이다.
시온의 왕관은 나에게 너무 작고, 솔로몬의 반지도 내 손가락에는 맞지 않는다.
 
"Behold my hand.
See you not that it is over-strong to hold a sceptre,
and over-sinewed to wield a common sword?
내 팔을 보라. 왕홀을 잡기에는 너무 억세고  
칼을 그냥 휘두르기에는 너무나도 군더더기 근육이 많은 팔이 아니냐?

"Nay, I shall not command Syrian flesh against Roman.
But you with my words shall wake that city,
and my spirit shall speak to her second dawn.
나는 시리아인에게 로마인들을 공격하라고 명령하지 않을 것이다.
그러나 너희와 함께 한 나의 말은 도시를 깨울 것이고,
나의 영혼은 그들의 두 번째 여명을 이야기할 것이다.

"My words shall be an invisible army with horses and chariots,
and without axe or spear I shall conquer the priests of Jerusalem,
and the Caesars.
내가 하는 말들은 달리는 말과 전차를 갖춘,
눈에 보이지 않는 군대가 될 것이며,
도끼나 창 없이도 예루살렘의 제사장들과 카이사르를 정복할 것이다.

"I shall not sit upon a throne where slaves have sat
and ruled other slaves. Nor will I rebel against the sons of Italy.
나는 노예들이 왕좌에 앉아서
다른 노예들을 다스리는 곳에서 왕이 되고 싶지 않다.
그리고 로마인들에 대항해서 반란을 일으킬 생각도 없다.

"But I shall be a tempest in their sky, and a song in their soul.
"And I shall be remembered.
"They shall call me Jesus the Anointed."
그러나 나는 그들의 하늘에서 폭풍우로 휘몰아 칠 것이며
그들 영혼의 노래가 되리라. 그렇게 해서 나는 기억되리라.
그들은 나를 '예수 그리스도'라고 부르게 되리라.

These things He said outside the walls of Jerusalem
before He entered the city.
And His words are graven as with chisels.
이 말씀들은 예수께서 예루살렘에 입성하시기 전에 남기신 것들입니다.
그리고 그분의 말씀은 끌로 새겨놓은 듯이 내 마음에 남았습니다.
